Dear Soha
Thank you for your letter. I am very happy that you want to be my pen friend. I was born in London but my family came to live in Australia seven years ago. First we lived in Sydney and now we live in Melbourne. We have been living here for four years. It is summer now. The weather is very hot. The sun has been shining everyday for months. We have got a small boat, which we sail when the weather is nice. We have been sailing most weekends since September. We have been studying Egypt this term at school. I have been reading about the geography and history of your country. It sounds really interesting. After school, I have been practising the piano a lot because I have got a test next week. I have been playing the piano for four years now and I can play quite well. Please write and tell me more about yourself and about Egypt.
Best wishes
Ann Brown

Reading
My name is John. When my brother Mike and I were boys, we wanted to sail around the world like our father. He was a ship’s engineer. One day, our mother told us some terrible news. "Your father’s ship has sunk in a storm. Your father is dead. There weren’t enough lifeboats." My mother moved to a new house and my brother and I forgot about the sea. For a time I was happy, then I started to dream about my father and the sea. One day, I phoned Mike. I said, " I want to go to sea. I want to sail around the world." Mike answered, "I want to come, too." When we told our mother she said, " You can go if you do what I ask. You must become good sailors. You must buy a good boat. You must speak to me every day on the radio so I know how you are. Finally, you must take a lifeboat so you will be safe if your boat sinks." We did what our mother asked. A year later, we were ready. Before we left, my mother spoke to me alone. She said, "Bring your brother safely back home. What will I do if I lose my sons?"

Reading
To be healthy, our bodies need food like meat, rice, fruit, beans and vegetables. Food gives us energy, but we need a healthy diet to give us the right quantities of energy. When we do sports, our bodies need more energy and need more food than when we watch TV. To be healthy, the quantity of food that we eat should be the same as the energy which our bodies use. Calories tell us how much energy there is in different food. For example meat and cheese have a lot of calories in them. Other food, like vegetables and fruits, have fewer calories. In the past, people usually ate food which they grew or bought and cooked themselves. Now many people buy and eat cooked food. This food sometimes looks good but it has many calories in it. If we often eat food with too many calories in them, we start to put on weight.
